I participated in a trial tour to watch salmon harvest from a set net.
A veteran local fisherman came along with us and gave us some talk
about the area and the nets.
This is how the net is set up underwater. The barrier net cut off the path and the fish
need to swim along it. It gets directed into a maze of net, unable to back up.
The fishermen hauled up the net underwater and scooped up the fish within,
with a net hung from a crane onboard.
The captain's sharp eyes never miss the bears on the beach.
Bear stands up to look further away, I hear. I wonder which one
he was looking at, a ship full of people, or a net full of fish.
Fish got unloaded at the port.
The expert fishermen were able to sort out the fish
by the size and the quality with just a glance.
The salmons are sold nationwide from here. I was told that the haul would be a double
on a good day. I have a mixed feeling about this. I love salmons. However,
it just looks such a sizable haul. There were many squids squashed
and died in the net, got thrown away to feed the seagulls.
