  • When Mrs. Jan Smith heard the phone rang

The phone rang.
"Hello, Mother. How are you, today?"
Jan was still on the phone, when she heard the door shut. It sounded like the one downstairs. To come to think of it, she hadn't seen nor heard June, her daughter, age two and a half, for some time.
"Could you hold for a minute, Mother?"
Then, their dog, George, barked and a car drove away. Jan hurried downstairs and checked the back door. It was closed tight. But she still couldn't see her daughter. Not downstairs, not upstairs. She tried her best to suppress her panic and went back to the phone.
"I'm sorry, Mother, but could I call you back? I can't find June."

  • When Mr. John Smith heard the phone rang

The phone rang.
"Mr. Smith, it's your mother."
It was a little unusual for her to call John in the middle of the day. John took the call, feeling a little concerned.
"Hi, Mum. What's up?"
"Did Jan call you?"
"No, anything wrong with her?"
"I was talking with her just a minute ago. She needed to hang up, because she couldn't see June. She sounded quite worried. I thought you might like to check with her."
John didn't think it was serious but called home just in case.
"Hello?" Jan sounded OK, or did it sound a little tense?
"Hi, Mum just called. Did you find June?"
"No, I couldn't." Now, her voice broke down. "I searched all the rooms and I called and called in the garden. What shall I do?"
"Do you think she's gone outside by herself?"
"While I was on the phone, I heard a door shut all of a sudden, then George barked and a car drove away..."
An image popped into John's head. A stranger dragged her dear daughter into his car. He could feel himself turning pale.
"Call the police. I'm coming right now."
In his car on the way home, his mobile phone rang.
"Hello, Smith here."
"Am I speaking to John?"
"Yes."
"I'm from the police. I was talking with your wife. Just wanted to check if you are with your daughter."
"No, she's not with me. So, she's not there? Did somebody take her?" He couldn't help raising his voice over the phone.
"We don't know yet. We'll call you as soon as we find something."
He was just turning into the his street, when his mobile phone rang again.
"John, you can relax now. We found your daughter."
When John heard where she was, he slapped his forehead hard. Why didn't I think of what she whispered to me this morning?
"Daddy, I'm going to have some lollypops today."

  • When June heard the phone rang

The phone rang. Mummy answered.
"Hello, Mother. How are you, today?"
Now, now. She's not looking this way. I'm going downstairs, very carefully, very quietly. Here's Mummy's car, all shiny, in the garage. Quiet, quiet. I'm opening the door very slowly, then going inside. Click, click, click. George's coming, sniffing, his toes making loud noise on the concrete floor. No, no, no. Mummy's going to hear that. I shut the door quickly.
"Bang!" "Bow, wow!"
Hey, George, quiet! Is Mummy coming? It'll be OK, if I keep quiet. Mummy car's got magic windows. You can see outside, but, from outside, they all look black. See? Mummy's just gone past the car, without seeing me. Mummy keeps some lollypops in this glovebox. See, how sweet. Yum, yum. I wonder if I'll get into trouble. But, they're so yummy. One more. She won't find me yet. Yum, yum.
