Kyoto Day 01

First, we board Astram Line. It's run by Automated Guideway Transit system.

Fully automated operation is said to be possible, but these ones have drivers.

If you board the first car, you can see the driver operating. At every station,

he checks the monitor in front of him to see if the doors are clear of passengers.

Between the stations, he changes gears while confirming the time with a clock

on the wall. There are many stations, not far from each other,

and he looks rather busy.

Next, the bullet train to Kyoto. Snack straight away.

There are varieties of sweet breads in Japan. They are quite tasty.

The first a-must thing you do in Kyoto is to visit Kinkakuji, the Temple of Golden

Pavilion. The last time I paid a visit here was some years ago. It is shiny as ever.

Located next to Hojo (abbot's chamber) is a pine shaped like a boat.

Estimated 600 years old. Samurai Age had risen and fallen,

but the boat tree is steadily on the rise.

The next a-must do is a visit to Kiyomizudera (a temple of spring water).

The children take a sip of the sacred water from Otowa Fall. It is not too busy

today. When I came here on my school trip, I remember I had to wait in a line

for a long long time. I think I used a bamboo dipper but I might be wrong.

Today, the ones children used look like aluminum. After the sip, you return

the dipper in a sterilizing device using ultra-violet ray.

Try it if you dare. Iron clogs, 12 kg. Easy peasy. Small iron staff, 14 kg. Not a problem.

Big iron staff, 90 kg. Hmm, now I am in business.

Break. Loving cool snacks in the scorching weather, born and bred New Zealanders.

I, Japanese, enjoy a cup of hot tea and a plate of sweet rice dumplings.
