Checking out the locals, here I go.
The main road, along the coast line is 2.3-m above sea level.
There is an eco-friendly compost toilet for public.
(Only one though, others are normal ones)
Going to climb up 60-m high Oronkoiwa Rock.
Fairly steep stairs, 170 steps according to the council. Each step rather high, the railing
relatively low, I feel weak in my knees every time I steal a glance at the sea. I am still
in the process of conquering my acrophobia.
Birds have no trouble moving about three-dimensionally.
Arrived safely. 8 must-visit places in Shiretoko, No. 2, Oronkoiwa Rock.
In between red and white lighthouses, cruise ships come and go all day.
The main road follows the coastline and snakes into the mountains to
Shiretoko Pass. This rock and the road are both well-known as
superb viewing spots for sunset over the Sea of Okhotsk.
Ypththima baldus. In Japanese, snake eye wavy back princess.
Sounds like a cousin of Gorgon sisters, so unfair to dainty butterflies.
A stink bug also loves honey. Shiretoko mountain ranges at the back.
Bombus pseudobaicalensis. Bright yellow is the signature
color of bumble bees, but this one is modest grey.
