Participated in a tour to walk on an animal trail.

Even before the tour started, we encountered a young stag.

The lawn seems to be quite palatable to deer.

Blazing autumn leaves and mushrooms under fallen leaves. This one is called a puffball,

as you can see. When poked, it puffs out its spores from the opening on top of its cap.

I wondered; would it last long enough till somebody comes along and pokes it?

The guide answered; it can also puff when an acorn drops on it.

I tried it and it worked. This makes the odds much better.

A beautiful day like this, a sunset is not to miss. After a quick lunch, on my way to

Uronkoiwa Rock. The autumn color blanketed the whole area and the Shiretomo

Mountain Range was powdered with white on top. For some reason, the Eagle

Post of Uronkoiwa Rock lost the 8-must-see-Shiretoko location board.

Got a bit greedy and added a night tour before tucking myself for the night.

We got on a minivan and went to look for animals in the dark.

Looking down from a bridge, we saw a black shadow moving. The photo doesn't show

well, but the triangle-like shadow between a rock and white flow of the river is a bear.

Right after this, it splashed into the river, picked up a salmon in its mouth

and climbed up the riverbank into the bush.

Along the road, we watched foxes and deer, then into the parking of Shiretoko

Five Lakes. A perfect star-watching day without a moon. Countless stars

scattered over the canopy above us. It was simply overwhelming. Each

and every one of those twinkling lights took so many light-years to reach

here at that moment. Dazzling thoughts. The universe continues to

expand, and the day will come when no star light will be visible from

the earth. If anybody left to see that is another issue. Morbid thoughts.

On the lighter note, there was a shooting star. Wow, a shooting star, still

going, and going, and going. It had a long tail, lasted long enough to mutter

'going' three times and more. It was too amazing that I forgot to make a wish.

The frigid air was biting us mercilessly, but nobody was keen to go back to

the van. Finally the guide suggested it was time to go back and

lead the unwilling group into the warm van.

One last stop on the bridge for bear watching. Unbelievably good timing. The same

bear which caught the fish before was on its way home. Holding our breath, we

watched the bear appear from under the bridge, leisurely strolled along the river.

The bear got further away into the darkness, and our guide gave it a spotlight

with his torch to see it off.
