To boldly go where I have never been before, I decided to take a position in Hokkaido, the northernmost prefecture of Japan. My last day in Kyoto was hot and muggy, and packing took me all day. Arrived at my hotel at nearly 9 o'clock in the evening.
It took me no time to find the hotel I booked, walking distance from Kyoto Station. Easy fairly flat streets gave me no trouble pulling my 20kg suitcase. No trouble, that was, till I got to the hotel. About ten steps of the staircase, without a slope, separated me from the hotel entrance. I made a last-ditch effort and managed to enter the lobby. Check-in was smooth, and I went up to my room with my card-key and my PIN.
Well equipped and stocked, but small. Fair enough, considering the price, though.
Late dinner at a restaurant, situated on the ground floor of the hotel. Sangria as an apéritif. Sangria is a punch with red wine and chopped fruit, set in a fridge overnight. A cool glass of light wine is perfect on a sultry night. A small dish of Tofu was served with wine, and that was exquisite.
Unfamiliar word, Ahijo. Spanish dish, using garlic and olive oil. It was hard to decide, but settled on shrimp and mushroom. Simmering hot dish, accompanied by a plate of crunchy baguette. After a hard day of sweaty work, a tasty dish was a just right remedy for fatigue.
Had room for one more dish. O-chazuke, a traditional Japanese dish, to finish a dinner course. I chose sake-marinated tuna as a topping. A rich olive-oil-flavoured Spanish dish, followed by a refreshing o-chazuke with tofu skin. Only the international city of Kyoto can offer this.
The last thing before bed was a public bath, on the top floor. The bath was the decider of my hotel choosing. It is gender-specific, and open till one in the morning. Not so big, but there is an open-air bath. It is open air all right, though surrounded by fences. You can just see a bit of sky. There is a water-bath too, and you can cool down before getting back into the hot bath. A great way to recover from a sweltering summer day.
The hotel I stayed was APA HOTEL <KYOTOEKI-HORIKAWADORI>.
