知床五湖までバスで行きます。往復券は途中下車自由です。

大ループ3kmに挑戦。
Going to try 3-km track, so called big loop.
ヒグマ遭遇の危険はあります。嗅覚の良い熊を誘惑しないよう、食べ物は密封
します。コースに入る前に受けなければいけないレクチャー時に袋ももらえます。
もちろん、コース内でのおやつは厳禁。飲み物だけは持ち込みを許されています。
There is always a risk of encountering bears. Bears are sharp-nosed. We must seal
our food to avoid attracting them. There is a mandatory lecture before starting a
course, and you can get some bags there too. Naturally, no eating is allowed
during your walk. You are allowed to bring in your drink, though.
鬱蒼とした熊笹に挟まれた小道を進みますと、二股に分かれた樹。
Along the path between dense striped-bamboo bushes, there was a forked tree.
幹が空洞でした。
The trunk was hollow inside.
こちらは熊の爪痕の残る幹。ヒグマは木登りが得意だそうです。
This tree had claw marks of a bear on the trunk. Bears are good at climbing trees, I hear.
霧深い、霧だか雨だかわからない湿気を頰に感じる一日でした。
A foggy day. I couldn't tell if the moisture I felt on my face was fog or fine rain.
寄らば大樹の陰。
Look for a big tree when you want a shelter.

こちらは葉が青々と茂っていますが、

中は見事に空洞。
it is completely hollow inside.
美しく作り上げた罠も今日は休業。
This trap was on break for the day, decorated beautifully.
ほとんど墨絵の世界でした。

おやすみどころはありますが、蚊の大群が待ち受けていました。虫除けスプレー必須。
There were some benches to sit down and rest, but a swarm of mosquitos
was waiting. An insect repellent is a must to bring.
老朽化の目立つキツツキ住宅。もう一軒だけいけるかも?
An aged woodpeckers' apartment. Maybe one more family?
最後の一湖のあたりになりますと、開けてきました。遠くに高架木道が見えます。
Around the first lake was an open land. An 800-m wooden elevated boardwalk could be seen at a distance.
明るくなった小道を辿って、
Through a pass with broader view,
高架木道へ。
to the boardwalk.
昔牧場として切り開いたそうですが、今は鹿の楽園。
The land was cleared for pastures, but now a paradise for wild deer.
普通に歩けば90分で回れる3kmですが、雨が降るとかなりぬかるみます。
It is about 90-min easy walk. It does get muddy when it rains.
