To Otaru by Hakodate Line.
The railway hugs the coast.
Lunch in Otaru.
Chef’s special 4-piece sushi. Such an archetypal sushi course, it turned out.
Tuna and crab.
Sea urchin and shrimp.
Miso soup with shellfish.
The rain stopped after lunch. So many souvenir shops,
one after another, for 1 km, maybe 2 km non-stop. I browsed in and out,
leisurely looking at beautiful glassware pieces. Tempting but too fragile, then
found a pair of wine stoppers. Perfect for my sister-in-law’s wedding gift.
Sold! Made my day.
I usually can’t finish a set menu, so didn’t intend to have dinner there. But, when I had a
looked at the menu of their mini-kaiseki (a style of traditional Japanese cuisine in
which a series of very small, intricate dish are prepared), I had to try it.
Grilled eggplant and ginger terrine. I’m not so keen on eggplants, but I loved this one.
A sashimi plate with yellow tail, trout, scallop and shrimp. Served with nori
and flatly pressed Katuobushi (dried fish, usually in a hard block form to shave
and use it for soup stock and flavoring). I couldn’t afford to fill my stomach
with sushi-rice so took only a small bite. Had nori and the flat fish thing
by itself. Everything was delicious, and I had to try very hard
to restrain myself.
Grilled dish, followed by stewed dish, and this, takikomi rice (rice cooked with
seafood, short-necked clam in this one and some vegetables). My favourite.
It came in a little cooking pot. I was feeling really full and looked at the pot
full of rice resentfully. The staff told me that they would make rice balls
if I couldn’t finish it. There is one dining place which allows a doggie bag!
(FYI, Many restaurants do not offer doggie bags, due to hygiene policies, in Japan.)
Custard pudding with Kumura and black sesame. This is for my dessert stomach.
Onsen, dinner, onsen again. Onsen has a cave setting where
you can lie down in the shallow warm water to relax.
Open air bus and steam sauna.
In the lounge, there are plenty of puffy sofas, coffee machine and a bottle of port.
Soft sound of acoustic guitar coming from a huge speaker, stained glass
lampshade casting colorful light in the room.
Otaru Is famous for its romantic flavor.
