My southbound journey day 04
Fine day on the second day in Otaru.
First, strolled through a pavement along the Otaru canal.
Found a bird.

It explains how to identify if it’s Japanese cormorant (Umio-sea cormorant)
or Great cormorant (Kawau-river cormorant).
It’s a Japanese cormorant.

Stretching to the fullest.
People enjoyed the canal, too. I was the observer.
Looking at the opposite side from the waterfront and the roads
lead into rather steep hills. Panting, I reached a Shinto shrine on top of
one of the almost vertical (that how it felt) slopes. Cherry blossoms were
still in buds. I wouldn’t be able to see cherry blossoms in full bloom this year.
残雪深く、除雪もなく、いけませんでした。 ^^;
Tried to go up a hill which supposed to have an observatory deck,
but the remaining snow was still deep (no snow removal service).
I couldn’t do anything but to give up.
Lunch at a sushi train restaurant.
A bulbul, singing on top of a tree.
At former Misui Bank Otaru branch, you can enter the safe underground.
I had Panju, with Darjeeling tea. They complimented each other perfectly. Panju is a
locally developed sweet. Manju is a traditional Japanese sweet, usually filled with red
bean paste wrapped with kneaded dough. Panju is like Manju, but the wrapping is very
thin and crispy. The shop staff advised me to eat from the bottom, not to spill the filling.
There were many kinds of fillings to choose from. My choices were egg custard,
chocolate, and red bean paste. It was a perfect snack set after a-long-day-walk.
I climbed up the funky fire lookout.
A fire-fighting-dog statue, with a sweater on. So cute. He was rescued
from a fire and stayed with firefighters helping them
on every occasion for some decades. A true story.
The canal at dusk was romantic to the maximum.
